URBANE Study Background Over 70% of American Indians and Alaskan Natives live in urban areas. Yet, studies of Native elders' brain health have primarily focused on rural and reservation settings. Through brain scans and assessment of thinking and memory, this research study seeks to learn more about urban Native elders' brain health and examine how vascular brain injury, like strokes, may contribute to increased risk of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias. Information from this study will be used in the aggregate (group averages instead of individual peoples' information) to answer questions about the health and well-being of urban-dwelling Native elders as they age. The information gathered throughout this research study seeks to shed light on the factors that may help prevent the development of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) and the factors that may increase risk for the development of ADRD in urban Native elders. We will communicate our findings through strategies such as newspapers, tribal health departments, and presentations to community members.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

- American Indian or Alaska Native
- Urban resident or work in urban area (non-reservation)
- Aged 55 or older
- Willing and able to provide informed consent and complete all study procedures, including MRI scan of the head
- Willing to return for possible follow-up study
Exclusion Criteria:
- People who have participated in CDCAI or Strong Heart Stroke Study (SHSS)
Eligible participants will be asked to complete questionnaires, routine lab work procedures, physical examination, thinking and memory games, and physical function assessment. They will also be asked to undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of the head.
Volunteers will receive up to $250 for completing the clinical exam, and MRI. Anyone can earn a $50 referral incentive per eligible person who completes the study.
