Our researchers want to help you reduce your cocaine use through our treatment research study.
Quitting cocaine can be difficult to do on your own. Our research team is investigating a medication called clavulanic acid (CLAV) as a way of helping people cut back or quit completely. Additional Information
The main purpose of this study is to determine how an experimental study drug, clavulanic acid (CLAV), can help people reduce or stop their cocaine use.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:
- 18-70 years old
- Have been using cocaine at least weekly for at least one year
- Body weight of at least 99 lbs. and BMI between 17.5 - 39.9
- If able to become pregnant, willing to use effective birth control until at least 30 days after the study is complete
- Live near the study site, agree to attend all visits, and not planning to move away in the next 4 months
- Have not used cocaine in the past 30 days
- Any substance use disorder besides nicotine, caffeine, cocaine, alcohol, or marijuana
- Allergy to clavulanic acid, penicillin, or any beta-lactam drug
- Needs treatment with any psychoactive medications including any anti-seizure medications
- Schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, or unstable psychiatric illnesses
- Current epilepsy
- Pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant
- History of head injury where you lost consciousness for more than 10 minutes
Once enrolled, participation involves a screening visit, a baseline visit, 3 study visits per week for 12 weeks, and then one follow-up visit. You will be given the study medication or placebo, clavulanic acid (CLAV), as well as medication management treatment.
Compensation of up to $1,255 is provided for participation.
There is no cost to you for participating in the study.
