The purpose of this study is to learn more about the effects of a study medication called levetiracetam, or Keppra. This study medication is normally used to treat seizures in people with epilepsy, but we are trying to understand if a much lower dose of this study medication could have helpful effects on attention and brain function in individuals with schizophrenia. This may help us to find new types of treatment for schizophrenia.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Between the ages of 18 and 70
• No metal or electronic devices in your body
• Diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder

Participation in this study first involves a screening visit where we check your health and see if you qualify to participate in the study. In addition to the 4 weeks of study medication and 4 weeks of placebo pills, there are 4 study days involved. During each study day, we would have you complete questionnaires, medical exams, clinical interviews, and some tasks involving memory and attention. You would also complete a noninvasive brain scan, using an MRI, on each study day. In addition to the study day, you would come in for check-in visits while taking the pills. The whole study will last for approximately 14 weeks.

Compensation up to $450 is provided for participation in this study. The study can also provide transportation.
