About our research
We want feedback to optimize a website that aims to help transplant candidates find transplant centers quicker.
Every 10 minutes someone is added to the organ transplant waiting list. Previous studies have shown that kidney transplant is a more effective treatment than dialysis. For patients with end-stage liver, heart, or lung disease, life is often not sustainable without a transplant.
On average, every day 79 patients undergo transplants while 18 others die waiting. Mortality on the waiting list remains high. Most transplant candidates have end-stage organ failure due to a variety of chronic diseases.
Despite the availability of the best medical care, patients with end-stage disease have difficulty finding transplant centers that transplant patients like them. The cost of caring for these end-stage disease patients is high.
Recognizing the needs of transplant candidates, researchers are creating a patient-friendly website that allows candidates to find transplant centers that meet their specific needs so they can get access to the transplantation sooner.

Additional Information
All adults who may need a transplant (kidney, liver, heart and lung) are eligible for the randomized, controlled trial (RCT) for their respective organ. We will focus on recruiting such patients who may need a transplant in the future.
Before the intervention, a study team member will explain the study design and use of hypothetical scenarios to the participant. The concept of randomization will be also be explained. The participants will be asked a few questions to assess their understanding of the study design.
Only those participants who understand the study design will be invited to participate in the intervention and will be randomized. For subjects who are randomized, a survey will be administered verbally to collect demographic information and information about their disease and severity of disease and comorbidities. A functional health literacy and numeracy assessment and health status questionnaire will be completed.
One group will be shown website A and the other group website B. Each participant will have at most 30 minutes to view the website assigned to them. After viewing the website, responses to the intervention will be collected. Sessions where participants are viewing the websites, will be recorded using Zoom. We will also see if you ever get listed for a transplant on the national waiting list by looking for your name on the national waiting list in the long term, such as at 3 months, 12 months after viewing the website and at the end of the study.

Participants will receive a $40 for their participation after their interventional testing visit.
There will be no cost to you to participate in the study.
