The University of Miami Health System aims to identify the genetic factors that cause Tourette's Syndrome using a family-based approach
- Individuals diagnosed with Tic Disorder or Tourette's
- Family members have not been diagnosed with Tic Disorder or Tourette's
- Parents with a child that has been diagnosed with Tic Disorder or Tourette's
- Biological parents able to attend the study visit
Study Background
Tourette syndrome (TS) is defined by having both multiple motor and vocal tics that last for more than one year and start before 18 years old. Examples of motor tics are eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, and body bending. Vocal tics may include sniffing, tongue clicking, and repeating words/phrases.
We are interested in developing better therapeutic options for TS. The University of Miami Health System aims to identify the genetic factors that cause Tourette Syndrome & Tic Disorders by using a family-based approach. This will greatly contribute to our understanding of Tourette Syndrome & Tic Disorders and may help develop new therapeutic treatment options for the future.

Additional Information
This study is looking to increase our knowledge and understanding of the inheritance patterns and genetics of Tourette’s/Tic Disorder through DNA.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria:

- Diagnosis of a Tic Disorder or Tourette's Syndrome
- Family members have not been diagnosed with Tic Disorder or Tourette's Syndrome
- Both biological parents able to attend the study visit
The study involves a single visit to our office where each participant will have their blood drawn, answer a questionnaire, and receive a free comprehensive psychiatric evaluation.
Participants will be compensated up to $50 per subject.
There is no cost to participate in this study.
