Researchers hope to help you gain a better scientific understanding of quitting smoking and relapse in daily smokers.
Today, 14% of the population in the United States smokes cigarettes. Many would like to quit and some quit and end up relapsing. Addiction to cigarettes is a massive health care expediture for our country, accounting for 138 billion dollars. We need to understand more about smoking and the effects on our brain.
The purpose of our research is to study the brain reactions in daily smokers. We also want to investigate the effects of smoking on men and women and their ability to quit smoking. We will use brain imaging (PET and MRI) to determine what causes a greater chance of relapse to smoke and to identify differences in brain activation between men and women while they are smoking a cigarette.
Researchers hope to gain a better scientific understanding of smoking cessation and relapse in daily smokers.
